Titanium dioxide nanoparticles, found in many household items, cause systemic genetic damage.

A Nov. 17, 2009 ScienceDaily report discusses an article published in Cancer Research which studying the risk of titanium dioxide (TiO2).  Titanium dioxide is found in paint, cosmetics, sunscreen, vitamin supplements, toothpaste, food colorants and many other products.  It has the E171 name in food coloring.  The researchers found that when mouse ingested titanium dioxide through their drinking water, genetic damage was detected within five days.  There is no way for the body to clear these particles so they accumulate and move through the tissues.  Human risk is thought to be high for those exposed to the particles in inhalation form or in food as the particles cannot pass through skin.
