Wired Magazine has a stimulating report on the use of light to control individual neurons

Wired reports on how the discovery of a light-sensitive protein channel led to allowing mice with a model of Parkinson’s disease to walk again.  It is an interesting tale of how serendipity, false leads and determination event lead to major advances .  According to the article, the researchers who ameliorated the Parkinson’s disease symptoms in mice are now working on repeating their studies in Rhesus monkeys with the eventual aim being human trials.
