Man thought to be in a vegetative state for 23 years was conscious the whole time

The Daily Mail (Nov. 23, 2009) has a report about a man who was diagnosed as being in a coma with his consciousness gone.  However, three years ago new tests done by Dr. Steven Laureys showed that his brain was almost fully normal although the man was almost completely paralyzed.  Since then, he has a computer that he can write messages with as well as a device that lets him read books.  Currently, many people in comas are being tested with the latest technology to see if they are conscious.

There has been a lot of speculation that since the man is typing in an aided fashion, the man may not be conscious.  New Scientist has an interview with the doctor where these issues as well as evidence for consciousness is discussed.
